There are many different types of cosmetic weight loss procedures for individuals to choose from, depending on the desire result. The three most popular choices for cosmetic weight loss are SmartLipo, Liposuction, and CoolSculpting. These three options are proven safe, effective, and are continuing to grow in popularity. Here is a brief look at each of these popular weight loss procedures.
Early in the 1980’s, traditional liposuction made its debut in the US. In this procedure the patient is placed under general anesthesia. A cannula vacuum is inserted into the skin to remove excessive amounts of fat through suction. Patients are generally left with bruising after the procedure and potentially loose skin. Recovery takes up to several weeks. Some patients do not have the results they desire (often due to inappropriate or unattainable expections) and the procedure comes with a number of risks and side effects. For those patients with a lot of weight gain, this is often the best way to eliminate larger areas of fatty deposits. Other ancillary procedures may be necessary to improve the outcome, or to get closer to the expectations.
This procedure is similar to traditional Liposuction in that there is a tube inserted under the skin. Unlike the traditional Liposuction, instead of just a suction tube, SmartLipo uses a laser fiber that delivers laser energy to the treated area to rupture unwanted fat cells and then drain them, while building more collagen in the skin for a firmer appearance. The procedure requires no sedation, instead just a local anesthetic administered by the surgeon. Due to its less abrasive nature, a coagulating effect of the laser, and the much smaller cannulas for suctioning, the patient is left with much less bruising and swelling, and a substantially shorter amount of recovery time. Ideal patients are those within 20 pounds of their ideal body weight.
SmartLipo is an excellent procedure for those who desire to look and feel better, but have had very little success with the usual diet or exercise programs. Cosmetic weight loss procedures have developed greatly over the last 30 years. Now there are more choices and less invasive, safer ways to accomplish a weight loss goal. SmartLipo destroys the body’s fat cells and tightens the skin. This procedure was specifically developed to rid the body of fat, especially in those stubborn areas that harbor unwanted fat cells. There are very few possible complications and no adverse side effects with this procedure.
With great technological advancement, new procedures for performing cosmetic weight loss have emerged. CoolSculpting in one of the latest advancements, which can help reduce fat layers by 20 to 40 percent. The results depending on the patient and the area to be treated. It is important that a preliminary consult (complimentary in our office) be performed in order to make sure she or he is a candidate, discuss options and set expectations at realistic level. A surgeon and his certified staff will perform this non-invasive procedure in the office. Some patients will see the results in approximately 3 weeks. However, there will be continued progress for up to 4 months for most patients.
How Does CoolSculpting Work?
CoolSculpting is successful because it is based on the scientific procedure cryolipolysis. The term, Cryolipolysis is formed from “cryo” meaning icy cold and “lipolysis” meaning chemical destruction of fat. This scientific procedure does just that! Extremely cold temperatures are administered to localized areas of undesirable fat. A pocket of fat is carefully suctioned up from the body using a vacuum applicator and then it is exposed to cold temperatures. The fat cells are vulnerable to the cold temperatures and will begin to crystallize. The natural processes of the body are to break down the fat and naturally flush it away.
Who has the best results with CoolSculpting?
Cosmetic laser surgeons carefully screen candidates for the procedure. The ideal candidate is just 10 to 15 pounds from their goal weight. This procedure is perfect for getting rid of those stubborn last few pounds in troublesome areas such as the belly, love handles, or bra line. CoolSculpting is a highly effective method of removing unwanted pockets of fat from the areas of the body where it is most likely to accumulate. It can be a great way for post bariatric procedure patients to complete their transformation or anyone who has lost a significant amount of weight. It can be helpful in body sculpting to help your clothes fit better, and often results in motivating further weight loss.
CoolSculpting is a FDA approved procedure that is safe and non-invasive. Patients may return to their normal activities immediately following the procedure. There are no needles, incisions, or any medications needed. Some patients may experience some minor side effects, such as numbness, tingling, minor bruising or redness in the treated area. It is rarely painful, but it is minimally uncomfortable as the target area is cooled. There is no anesthesia so there is absolutely no recovery time!
Are there any adverse side effects?
There has been no evidence of any long term adverse side effects. The procedure is completed by our qualified staff and will take approximately one hour per application. Occasionally, the two hour application is required. During the procedure, patients may read, surf the web, listen to music, or take a nap. The procedure is performed using a small vacuum applicator, which gently pulls the fat away from the body so that the cool temperatures can be applied. The fat is not surgically removed. It will be naturally washed out of the body over the next few months. Typical cases take between 2 and 4 months to rid the unwanted fat cells from the body.
The CoolSculpting™ applicator pulls energy away from those fat cells. Once the fat cells have been cooled, they can be safely flushed out of the body completely. The procedure is FDA approved safe and non-invasive. Recovery time is short with some reports of minor redness, numbness immediately following the procedure, and mild bruising. Recovery time is very short because there is no anesthesia, no medications, and no needles or incisions. The ideal patient will need one series of applications in their “Treatment to Transformation.” Those with more challenging excess weight issues may require more applications.
