Spider veins are damaged capillaries located close to the surface of your skin, which appear as pressure builds in the tiny veins. They look like small fine red and/or blue lines usually on your legs or face, but can appear anywhere on the body. The National Institutes of Health report that about 50 percent of women and 40 percent of men develop spider veins on either their legs or face. While about half of the adults over the age of 50 develop spider veins, some people notice them when they are in their 20s. Rarely, similar veins can appear on the face in the first 20 years.
Some of the causes of spider veins include the following:
- Genetic factors
- Weight gain
- Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
- Excessive sun exposure
At one time, medical professionals thought of spider veins as solely a cosmetic issue. Today, venous disease experts recognize spider veins as early symptoms of vein disease. Treatment of many types of spider veins is considered medically necessary to prevent the progression of the underlying vein disease.
